Federal agents searched a Beverly Hills mansion early Tuesday as part of the investigation into former Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), a source familiar with the investigation confirmed on Tuesday.
“Early this morning the FBI conducted an operation in the Los Angeles region related to an ongoing criminal investigation. We have no further comment,” an FBI spokesperson told us.
The home belongs to billionaire developer and Swalwell donor Stephen Cloobeck, a former California gubernatorial candidate.
Swalwell spent time there before he resigned from Congress in April, the AP reported, with activity on Roxbury Drive starting around 7 a.m. The court documents are currently sealed.
Federal agents also seized electronic devices from Swalwell at the San Francisco airport on Aug. 15 and searched his Washington home on Aug. 16, as part of a probe connected to sexual assault allegations, CNN first reported.
Swalwell resigned and dropped his bid for governor in April after the San Francisco Chronicle, followed by CNN, reported allegations of sexual misconduct, including from a former staffer who said he raped her.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department also opened criminal investigations and Los Angeles prosecutors are reportedly weighing charges. Swalwell has denied criminal wrongdoing.
Cloobeck is also facing felony witness intimidation charges filed by Los Angeles County prosecutors.
