On August 6th, Sources Say released an exclusive covering Katie Miller’s fling with Rep. Eric Swalwell while she was a 22-year-old intern on Capitol Hill. Miller seemingly confirmed the past relationship on X, responding to her own tweet that criticized Swalwell’s harassing behavior towards interns with the statement, “I was an intern working on Capitol Hill.”
In this exclusive, Sources Say clarified that this coverage was not meant “to shame anyone for what they did in their 20’s”, but rather explore how these types of relationships have means to impact the power dynamics in the future. Many prominent media figures, however, are using this fling as an aim to slut-shame and discredit Miller’s previous political statements.
Media influencer, Anna Connelly (@annaconnellyiscool), cites Miller’s previous tweet from June 2nd that states “Capitol Hill has a culture filled with alcohol and late nights…If a young female attends any of these functions, she knows the culture full well and subscribes to the debauchery that ensues.”
Connelly alludes to irony in this statement, considering Miller’s relationship when she was an intern on Capitol Hill. She concluded her video discrediting Miller’s status as a victim, and points out the current misconception that this scandal is currently being portrayed as a recent affair between Miller and Swalwell, making Stephen Miller, her husband and White House Chief of Staff, a cuckold, a rumor she proudly claimed she will not shut down.
Most of the remaining responses have been a direct attack of slut-shaming on Katie Miller, rather than a criticism of her ideals. Influencer Joanne Carducci (@jojo.fromjerz) turned to X to express her shock at this new Miller scandal, along with the accompanied tweet “Is there anyone in DC Katie Miller hasn’t fucked?👀”
This type of shaming is echoed across X, with activist Jamie Bonkiewicz saying in a post that “Katie Miller’s type appears to be the worst men in American politics. Which makes perfect sense because garbage attracts garbage.”
Others, like Jennifer Welch and Loren Piretra, hosted a podcast in which they referred to Miller as “the bicycle of DC”, a metaphor that only echoed the slut shaming Miller has been facing. They go on to further slut shame, joking that Stephen Miller should get a paternity test for his four children shared with Katie Miller.
