The recent passing of Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C) has left South Carolina reeling, with the search for the replacement interim senator creating friction between certain members of the Republican party
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C) added fuel to the fire after posting a clip of The Godfather on X, captioned: “Just when I thought I was out…they pull me back in…” alluding to her pull to serve as Graham’s replacement for the remainder of his term.
Mace recently lost in her bid for governor earlier this summer, losing in the Republican primary, and her term in Congress will conclude in January 2027. Her tweet faced intense backlash from the public, with many criticizing the insensitive timing in relation to Graham’s death.
Standing out in the forefront of this backlash is Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.). Lawler responded to this tweet, calling Mace’s attempt on the vacant Senate seat “grotesque” and “vile”, concluding the post with the comment that Mace is “completely unfit to serve”.

Mace later reversed course, posting her support for President Trump's suggestion that Graham's sister, Darline Graham Nordone, serve as interim senator.
On Monday, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster made it official, appointing Darline Graham Nordone to carry out the remainder of her brother's term. 🍸
