It is a rare room where you can scan the crowd and spot former talk-show hosts, sitting U.S. senators, MAGA loyalists and canceled comedians all gathered to celebrate the same man. On Sunday night, the Kennedy Center became exactly that as Washington and Hollywood converged to hand Bill Maher the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
Bill Maher has spent 30 years offending both sides of the aisle, yet politicians from both parties still came out to applaud him. Comedians Louis C.K., Whitney Cummings and Jay Leno, who received the prize himself in 2014, actor Woody Harrelson, media mogul Arianna Huffington and rock icon John Mellencamp turned out to toast the veteran political satirist. Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), Dr. Mehmet Oz and Attorney General Pam Bondi were also spotted among the crowd.
When it came time to accept, Maher skipped the tearful gratitude. The comedian, who has never been shy about taking shots at both sides, used the moment to thank the audience that has stuck with him through all of it.
"Now the president, when he is in attack mode, never fails to say I am part of the lunatic left," Maher told the crowd. "Okay, he's not wrong that there is one. I'm just not part of it, and I'm sure there is a lunatic right. And when either side gets mad at me because I put them in jokes, jokes that work, my message to them is simple: You want to not get mocked? Stop being funny."
"Laughter is involuntary," he added. "It's people's inescapable truth detector, whether they want to believe it or not."
"People say they want honesty, they don't. They want to live in a bubble. They say they want to be challenged, they don't. Except for my audience. They love it, and I love them for it,” he said.
The night wasn't without its staged chaos. Comedian Matt Friend briefly crashed Maher's speech with a sharply executed Trump impression, a planned bit that drew some of the loudest laughs of the evening from a room full of people who spend their days dealing with the real thing.
The honor wasn't without controversy. Weeks earlier, the White House had pushed back on Maher as the recipient, though he was ultimately confirmed for the award.
Mellencamp closed out the ceremony performing two of his hit songs, a crowd pleaser that sent the night off on a high note.

The real magic happened upstairs at the afterparty, where Maher-themed photo booths, an array of cuisine and espresso martinis kept guests going well past midnight. The party spilled out onto an outdoor terrace overlooking the city, where Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick was briefly seen chatting with Maher, who was smoking a joint, and Woody Harrelson.
Maher's Mark Twain Prize special hits Netflix on July 21. He continues to host HBO's Real Time.
